Media Advisory - Photo/Interview Opportunity – 19 Years of a United Yemen - Reception and Awards Gala, Honoring the Canadian Medical Delegation and Nexen Inc.

OTTAWA May 22 –

When: 6 pm – 8 pm, Monday, May 25, 2009. Where: Hilton Lac Lemay, Gatineau

His Excellency Khaled Bahah, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen and former Minister of Oil, will host his first National Day reception and present awards to Dr. Martin Robinson of the Canadian Medical Delegation and to Eric Miller, VP of Nexen Inc of Calgary for the Nexen Scholarship Program.

The reception will be a grand celebration of 19 years of Yemeni unity, and among the notables will be a live camel, thanks to Montreal’s Granby Zoo. It will include many colourful displays of Yemeni heritage.

Yemen reunified on May 22, 1990. North and South Yemen merged together to form one democracy, under one flag: the Republic of Yemen. For the first time, elections were held, with both men and women voting. Immediately, Yemen charted new goals in economic development, improving human rights, democracy, health care and education. The Embassy will recognize two Canadian entities whose generosity has had profound impact on our development.

Our first award goes to the Canadian Medical Delegation. CMD was started by legendary physician, Dr. Martin Robinson, 20 years ago, when he was the first Canadian physician ever invited to Yemen. Together with prominent colleagues, the donation of their time and implementation of the motto, “Teach the Teachers”, they provided essential training to the Yemeni medical community, particularly, increased life expectancy from 42 years in 1980 to 61 years since the inception of this initiative.

Nexen Inc of Calgary is known as Yemen’s greatest corporate citizen, whose extraordinary generosity and corporate responsibility has included water and medical projects. They will be recognized for the Nexen Scholarship Program, which continues to provide substantial scholarships to study in Canada to over 100 students over the past 11 years and is an investment in Yemen’s future.
